Character of the Topeng Pajegan, sida Karya (the one who can proceed to the ritual) selem (black mask) is the buddhist version of the Balinese
Sida Karya Putih (white mask). Depending on the type of representation, one would pick one or the other.
Sida karya selem looks like a proud character form
Jero Gede, the giant from the Barongs lineage. A powerful and feared character, his role in the hindu tradition is to push away the weak and evil spirits. Sida Karya is also the last one to appear on stage during the Topeng Pajegan. Hypnotic and strong, his mission is to check that the evil has indeed been chased away and that good moral is untouched. Despite of the fear around this importante character, the children in the public always impatiently look forward to his presence, as he also offer them yellow rice and Chinese coins to celebrate the happy end and a closure to the ritual.
