Jero Gede's mask can be used for various occasions : in the Barong Landung or during ceremonies and processions in the village. Him and his wife
Jero Luh form a couple of giants and are therefore used as huge puppets on those occasions. As Barong sacred masks, they are kept in the temple of the village. Several legends make the origins of this mask. It would be of a Prince in India, of a King in Bali or even from an incestuous demon names Jero gede Mecaling. According to the legend, the latter lived on the island of Nusa Penida and disembarked in Bali, accompanied by a pack of demons to invade the South of the island. The desperate villagers sought advice by the priest who decided to create a " big " Barong, which would be as strong as the invader and who could help the villagers. The Barong managed to scare the demon off and forced him to go back to his island. Since then, Jero gede is used to chase evil spirits, illnesses and other scourges.
