A typical Balinese mask, Telek is played in Calonarang and Barong. It is a very strong character in Balinese tradition, but is not played much anymore. Origins of the masks are blurry. In spite of its devilish appearance, Telek is the guardian of the Gods temple and he stands next to Barong Ket for Barongs dances. Telek and Jauk Keras are tightly linked in one of Barongs dances. They fight against each other and it announces the great battle opposing Ket Barong Ket and Rangda. Several women in ballet also play Telek. At that time the masks are called: Tari Topeng Telek
