Character of the Javanese Wayang Wong, Semar is a servant and spiritual counselor for one of the protagonists, who is usually a high class dignitary. He is also a narrator for the audience. Origins of Semar’s character are blurry. Despite his divine origins, he has a human clown-like appearance. Semar is clumsy and ugly. In Bali, Twalen is the equivalent of Semar.
