He is a central character who appears in several types of plays and danses (as the Gumbuh, the Babakan Topeng or the Javanese Topeng Panji). In Bali, the Adventures of Panji are played in the Gedog Wayand, The equivalent of the Wayang Topeng.
There are many versions of the Panji chronicles. He central theme remains the love stor between PAnji and Candra Kirana (princess of Daha), steming from a poem called « Smaradanha » (Love’s Fire).
In one of the version, CAndra Kirana is kidnapped by the God KAla Betara the day before her wedding. Panji looks for her outside of his Kingdom. Both in disguise to avoid being found out, the lovers wil meet several times without ever recognising the other one. Their face to face encounter during a battle will finally enable them to find each other.

Klana is Panji’s worst ennemy as he’s jealous of the Candra Kirana’s love for Panji.
